Supervision of Building Assistants

Overview: The Atwood Memorial Center (AMC) is the premier student union building and center-piece of most student activities on campus. The building has numerous meeting spaces and event rooms which makes it a preferred choice of student-centered activities on campus. It also houses several offices and service centers that provide relevant support to students such as the Multicultural Student Services office, LBTQIA Center, Women Center, Native American Center and the Dean of Student Affairs office.
The Building Assistants (BA) program designed and developed to provide students with an opportunity to develop professional capacity and relevant skills required for managing the student space on campus. As the supervisior of the program, I was tasked with providing leadership guidance and support to student workers that are in the building assistant roles and interface with the General Maintenance Workers (GMW) to ensure that;
**Relevant tasks are assigned to the assistants
**Set goals are achieved within the stated period
**Student work experience was optimized to provided adequate support and meet service goals

Learning Outcomes:I was able to develop skills and dispositions that enabled me;
**Establish mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues and students to ensure seamless operational dynamics
**Advocate for the building assistants with the leadership team
**Mediate areas of conflicts that may arise due to misunderstanding based on different cultural values and worldview
**Use technology effectively to manage the time, shifts, responsibilities and tasks assigned to building assistants as support staff.
